Members of the Fairview Area Historical Society are pleased to help spread the word about the Open House at the Lincoln Library, a branch of the Erie County Library system.  The date is Saturday, February 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fairview residents tried for years to have a branch in the township.  Meetings, meetings, etc., etc.  The Bookmobile was great, but a bricks and boards place with lots to read inside was much better.  More than 10 years ago it happened.  (We’re working on the exact date when this branch opened.)

The library is on land once owned by the Swan family.  Capt. Richard Swan moved to the area to operate the mills at the mouth of Walnut Creek in the year 1800. In the early 1900s the Matthew Taylor family purchased the land from Captain Swan’s grandson Edwin.  Matthew’s son George then owned it, adding many acres to it. He operated it as a dairy farm and eventually made it available for a subdivision, Lake Shore Country Club and community center, White Swan Civic Center.  The parcel across West Lake Road from his home was soon set aside for a school – Manchester.  And the open land just west of the school was a wonderful place to fly kits in the spring, play ball games, and more.

George and his wife Helen had no children, but arranged for many activities in the area that children would love.  The Taylors would surely love the current use of their land – a library with childrens’ story hours, and more.

So.  To all those folks who wanted a local branch of the county library, to all those who bring children to the story hours and craft events, to all those who read the newspapers and magazines in the comfy seats, to all those who speak on different subjects  or who attend the speaker events, who borrow books, cds and dvds, to all those who appreciate this wonderful source of limitless information and the joy of reading, please take a few minutes on February 23rd to visit the library and tell the folks there how much they and the library are appreciated.

Special note:  other branches have been opened also and for anyone reading this before Saturday, February 16, the Edinboro Branch will have an open house that day – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Show your appreciation!
